Monday Blues

As Erin said, today is a typical Monday. She spilled water all over her table and computer keyboard while Neil's computer has crashed (again) and seems beyond hope. We tried to reformat it by inserting the QuickRestore CD that comes with the laptop but it's not helping any. I guess we'll have to bring it to BestBuy to get it fixed. Buti na lang, it's still under warranty for another 2 months.

Of course, the weekend was a totally different matter. We went out to Metairie with Erin and Dalton on Saturday. We helped Erin set up an account with BSI comics and picked up our own stuff. We then visited the new Whole Foods Market out on Veterans which is gigantic. It was also full since it had just opened. One of the first things we saw when we walked in were "Manila Mangoes" from Mexico. Ironic, no? We decided to get 2 kahit ridiculous yung presyo, just to see if they were any good. OK naman pero manibalang. We also saw green papayas, tenga ng daga and japanese mushrooms. Neil also asked the meat guys if they would could cut meat into thin sukiyaki slices. The guy said yes, but give them at least an hour's warning so they could freeze the beef. Shabu-shabu here we come!

After Whole Foods, Erin and Dalton had to head home while Neil and I caught the bus to King Buffet. After lunch, we were waiting at the bus stop and met an elderly woman who was visiting from Las Vegas. She immediately asked us if we were Filipino. I was surprised she knew but it turns out she comes from a church where there are a lot of Pinoys. She told us that she was so impressed by our customs that involve death, such as the lamay and the 40 day celebration. She thought to herself daw, what's wrong with the US and why don't they show their love for their departed friends and relatives the same way. She also wondered why we leave our country that has such wonderful practices for the US where people can be quite uncaring for one another. We had a really nice conversation and it made me realize things about our culture that I hadn't realized in the past.

That wasn't the only good thing that happened to us though. It seemed that that Saturday, we met up with a lot of nice people. This guy gave up his seat on the bus for Neil and me so we could sit together. Ayaw din daw niya kasi na nahihiwalay siya sa mga kasama niya when they ride together. And then the sales person at the Barnes and Noble was really nice when I asked her about the new Fruits Basket. She hadn't seen it at the store yet but she checked their database and saw that it was at the warehouse so she said that they'd just call me up when it was at the store na.

Hopefully the rest of the week turns out to be as good as the weekend.
