Procrastinating
I really should be writing my mock proposal right now. I actually started doing it after lunch but I am encountering my first bout of writer's block for the day.
In the meantime, I've decided to write about our Carnivale experience.
Jan. 30 - Neil and I attend our first parades of the year. We see the Krewes of Carrolton and King Arthur. It's a cold night but we have a lot of fun. Neil catches a red dragon medallion.
Jan. 31 - Yeo and Lianne arrive in the early evening. We go straight to ACME Oyster House for dinner where we all have oysters and po-boys. Afterwards, we walk to Cafe du Monde to have nice warm beignets. The powdered sugar was melting... mmmmm. Coffee was good too.
Feb. 1 - We take the day off from work to show them the Uptown area. It keeps raining the whole day. We hardly see anything from the St. Charles Streetcar. We get off at Oak street to check out the comic book store then we have coffee and cake at Rue de la Course. Coffee was good... the cakes could've been better. We then walk to Prytania to watch a movie but get there too early so we walk to Blue Frog Chocolates and Whole Foods on Magazine. We buy some apples and cheese then walk back to the movie theater, in time for the 4 pm showing of Phantom of the Opera. Movie was so-so. By the time we got out, the rain had stopped. We almost caught a parade uptown but arrived at Napoleon just as the parade was ending. We then have to walk a few blocks to Freret to catch the bus back downtown.
Feb. 2 - Our first parades together. We have dinner at McDonald's then wait over an hour in the cold for the parades of Saturn, Muses and Morpheus. We catch a lot of stuff. I even get hit in the head by a keychain. A pretty chunky one. Got a bump on my forehead from that. All 3 parades end at almost midnight. We're freezing by the end but we had a lot of fun.
Feb. 3 - We have lunch with Erin and Thomas at Mother Clucker's. As usual, I ended up with an upset stomach. So did Lianne. Then for dinner, we meet up with Jesse at Tucker's where we have fried pickles, fried mushrooms and deep-fried stuffed burgers. Welcome to the South :)
Feb. 4 - Normal day in the lab. Kalaya gives group meeting. I think her mind went on vacation early. For dinner, we go to Kanpai and have our fill of sushi. Yummy.
Feb. 5 - More parades: Iris, Tucks and Endymion. Tucks was a lot of fun. Their signature float is a "bidet" and Neil caught a miniature version of it. It actually spews out water when you lift the lid. Endymion was not as exciting as I remember it to be. The riders were quite drunk by the time they got to where we were standing and one of them actually asked a girl to french kiss him. Of course, she obliged... and for what? A plastic medallion that Neil and Lianne got by just asking. Whatever. Anyway, at some point, the parade stopped so we decided to just walk along Canal to see all the floats. After the parade we walk down Bourbon street to get a hurricane from Pat O'Brien's and a hand grenade from Tropical Isle. Honestly, I'd rather have an Abita Amber. The crowd wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but we did see a guy peeing on the sidewalk. He wasn't even facing the wall! But Neil said he was apologizing to everyone as they passed him. Must've really been drunk.
Feb. 6 - Went to church at Immaculate conception. We then had lunch at Bubba Bump and toured the French Market. In the afternoon, Neil, Yeo and I went to Erin's superbowl party, armed with 2 Randazzo's King Cakes. They were really good. Got back home in time to watch Project Runway with Lianne.
Feb. 7 - In the early evening, we decide to go to the Riverwalk mall. We get there in time to see Rex arriving. We stay to watch the ceremonies. It starts to rain when the fireworks start going off. As the firework show climaxes, the rain really starts to pour. When the show ends, so does the rain.
Mardi Gras - Our alarm, set for 7 a.m. does not go off. We wake up when Ate Joyce calls at 8 and meet her at 9 to watch Rex and Zulu. In spite of the late start, we get good spots on Canal Street. We don't get any coconuts this year. Oh well. Honestly, Rex and Zulu were disappointments. I thought the the most prestigious Krewes would have the best throws. Well, they didn't. After the parades, we had lunch at Purple Roses. This was at 3 p.m. Fun, fun, fun.
Ash Wednesday - Neil and I go to work in the morning. We're the only ones there. We then pick up Lianne and Yeo and go to the 12 nn mass at St. Louis Cathedral. We then head out to Metairie. We have lunch at King Buffet and then we pick up our comics and look around Toys 'R Us.
Feb. 10 - I have my topic approval meeting in the morning. It all goes OK. We then all have lunch at Nacho Mama's. We work the rest of the day and then Jesse picks us up for dinner and we go to Voodoo Barbecue. We have the meal for 5 and finish it all up. The girl said, that's the first time she's seen 5 people finish all that food. It was hard, but we did it :)
Feb. 11 - We wake at 9:30 and scramble to make it to group meeting (which starts at 9:30). I guess we shouldn't have stayed up late watching Yeo and Lianne play Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. Hehehe. We get there at 10, and luckily, no one is pissed with us. We make it through group meeting and then we all have lunch at the cafeteria. At 3, we leave for the airport. Yeo and Lianne check in and then we have some ice cream before they board the plane. We wait for them to get past security, which seemed to take a while. Then we hear the last call for their plane just after they get through the metal detectors. We get back to Deming at around 7 and have dinner. We wait around for the call from NJ and finally get it at 11.
Now they're back home, and it's just the two of us in the apartment. It was a lot of fun. We really should do it again.
